They actually leave craters (at least they did when they showed the game at unite 2012). For now this feature is probably disabled because nothing happens if you throw Mars into Earth except a big crater. Normally the surface of Earth would have literally be on fire. Nothing would be left. Even after the Earth will cool down nothing will look the same. Maybe there won't even be life on the planet anymore.

Although this would take a while in making possible, I would love to see this. It'd be pretty interesting to see how the size of an object, along with other properties, determines it's damage on a planet such as Earth.  :)
