Observations of clusters of galaxies and the large scale structure of individual galaxies tell us that no more than a quarter of the total amount of matter in the Universe consists of normal atoms and molecules that make up the familiar world around us. Of this normal matter, no more than a quarter emits the radiation we see from stars and hot gas. So, a large fraction of the matter in our Universe is dark and of unknown composition ."

"For the past ten years, active search projects have been underway for possible candidate objects for Dark Matter. One of many possibilities is that the Dark Matter consists of weakly interacting, massive sub-atomic sized particles known as WIMPs . Alternatively, Dark Matter may consist of massive compact objects ( MACHOs ), such as dead or dying stars (neutron stars and cool dwarf stars), black holes of various sizes or planet-sized collections of rocks and ice."

Is it really worth discussing? It was the same with the megabyte-mebibyte thing, and many other cases. If we just discussed the article, or commented on it, here would be less spam. We were so lucky that Dan moved all of our discussion to another topic, but we were in fact spamming, and we're going to do the same here if we don't stop.

To the article:
Interesting. I find it strange that dwarf stars can be dark matter though, I thought dark matter didn't only not emit light, but also didn't interact with it. But dwarf stars interact with light, and I assume they also emit a small amount of light, if not infrared light. So is dark matter really different from everything else? If it should account (partially) for the structure of the universe, the reason was that it was different from the normal matter and didn't interact with light. But when an article says dark matter is dwarf stars and normal matter is stars, I think dark matter is atoms and normal matter is... Atoms.  :'( :( >:( ??? :-[ :-\ :P ::)

But I didn't mean anihillate, I meant that it didn't interact. If it anihillated matter it would be antimatter, but you probably know that.
What I meant was that I thought it didn't interact with photons/electromagnetism, but did interact with gravity, and cause gravity (or how to say it). But dwarf stars interact with photons like everything else, so I don't see how it can be called dark matter. :P

Dark matter is so weird. It doesn't interact with anything, and it makes galaxies rotate faster than they should.

hmmm... maybe there areseveral different "types" of matter in the universe: regular matter, dark matter, and anti-matter, kind of like paint. when matter and anti-matter mix, enormous amounts of energy are made. When dark matter mixes with regular matter, nothing happens. When dark matter and anti-matter mix, well, that is to be discovered, i soppose.

Nah, anti-matter is just matter with opposite charges. Like we have negative electrons orbiting the positive atom nuclei, the antimatter has positive positrons orbiting the negative core.
Dark matter, if it's planets as I often hear and get confused about, is just like cold normal matter - even though some of it is still much hotter than our environments on the surface of Earth. I can't believe that's what dark matter is, because then I don't see any reason to distinguish it from normal matter, if it's just normal, old, boring atoms. :P
No, sorry atoms, I didn't mean it like that. Atoms are nice, except when they gang up to make evil persons. Anyways... Post!
