Even thought everyone has been calling the new version Universe Sandbox 3... this will undoubtedly be confusing when released on Steam as people will wonder: What happened to Universe Sandbox 2?

We've considered many names for the all new version... and at the risk of confusing those that are paying attention we're considering calling the new version:
Universe Sandbox 2
... as this will be the least confusing for those that aren't paying attention.

Thoughts?

Hmm, perhaps Universe Sandbox Unity Edition? I think going with 3 could be better, you could explain why it's 3 and not 2 in the description. I have a few names you could call it, Universe Infinite Sandbox, Universe Sandbox HD or maybe Universe Sandbox X. I think US3 might be better on steam, otherwise it would not make any sense on the forums, I was hoping for a new section.

Does this mean it's coming out very soon?

The forum categories can be renamed. And their will be a new section for the new version.

Dividing everyone on Steam into two groups, those that realize the internal version number of Universe Sandbox is 2.0 and those that don't... The 'don't' group is much, much larger. Most people will assume that the new version is Universe Sandbox 2 if only because the current version on Steam is called Universe Sandbox.

well if you don't name it Universe Sandbox people might not reconize the name and then they might not buy it. And, it's hard to think of a name that's Universe Sandbox without the 3

I agree with this, Universe Sandbox 2013 (or 14, depending on the year of release) seems the most logical name to go for. It will be impossible to get it confused with anything as everyone will instantly be able to tell its the new version. To tell people about US2 perhaps you could write in the Steam description something like "Universe Sandbox 2013 is a complete remake of the simulation Universe Sandbox 2 that was originally released in 2008....."

My dad suggested thinking of the new name this way:

Progress of Universe Sandbox
Universe Sandbox version 1
Universe Sandbox version 2 < current verison

New Version
Universe Sandbox 2 version 1

My hesitation in calling it Universe Sandbox 2014 is that we're not planning to do a new version every year, which is implied by that naming convention.

but most people don't think of it as Universe Sandbox version 2, so that might be a bit confusing.
and, that kind of sounds like 2.1 and we already have 2.1.4

I've always thought the first US2 as a big update to US1 instead of just being a new "game" in general.

Universe Sandbox 3 might cause confusion for skipping us2 on steam, but i don't think it would be a big deal. If europa universalis III didn't exist i wouldn't care too much and just buy europa universalis IV without worrying too much about the name discrepency.

with that said, if all else fails name it unibox sandverse

But if you do this, what will you do when you release ubox 4? call it Universe Sandbox 2 again? and do that again and again for every single version?

The thing is, on Steam Ubox 2 is just called "Universe Sandbox" The problem with naming the new release "Universe Sandbox 3" on Steam is that it could be confusing, so Dan is trying to figure out something.
In my opinion, he should call it Universe Sandbox 3 for the sake of accuracy, and maybe name the current release Universe Sandbox 2. That will fix all confusion.

Universe Sandbox 3 will work. People who feel (in error) like they missed "version 2" but are familiar with US won't panic, they'll just buy the latest version. Unless you feel that a 3 tacked onto the end doesn't fully encompass the sheer awesomeness of your title...

What about New Universe Sandbox, Universe Sandbox Enhanced, Universe Sandbox Elite, Universe Sandbox Premium, or Universe Sandbox: Alpha & Omega. What about those names? I think that the last name on the list is suitable as the new name because it is a simulator where you can pop things in and out of existence like a god for crying out loud.

Universe Sandbox 2 sounds like it would be the ideal way to go, wih the current US2 being "retconned" to v1.2 or something like that. If you're looking for other names though, here are a few possible suggestions:

Super Universe Sandbox, Universe Sandbox 2013/2014, Universe Sandbox: Enhanced, Universe Creator, Universe Sandbox: Stellar Edition, Celestial Sandbox, Universe Sandbox II, Universe Sandbox Mk. II, Universe Sandbox: Cosmos Creator, Universe Sandbox: Astrophysics Unleashed

What could be done is you could release an update which renames the previous version on steam to US2, then, calling the current version US3 will not be a problem.
