Winner of the contest in 2012:
Loreen - Euphoria - Live - Grand Final - 2012 Eurovision Song Contest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfo-8z86x80#ws)

Welcome to the official Eurovision 2013 hype thread! Still more than 2 weeks away until the final, however Eurovision season starts in December. Never a bad time to get hype. This year unfortunately lacks on the side of amazing songs, however never a bad year in order to go over the basics.

Introduction
- 39 different countries send an entry every year. Countries like Israel and Armenia are in the contest, so it isn't completely Europe specific.
- There are 2 semi-finals, 33 of the 39 songs compete for 20 places in the final. 10 songs from each semi-final. 6 entries automatically qualify to the final, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Germany, France and the host, Sweden.
- Songs are not the only part of the contest, live performances as well as vocals have a big effect. A good song can be killed by bad staging or bad vocals. Generally, the entry with the best of everything wins.
- Songs do vary quite a bit in music genres, however all of it can be fit under the "bubblegum pop" category.

Voting
- Countries in the semi-final give points to other countries in the semi-final.
- All countries give points in the final.
- Point format is 12, 10 and 1-8 points. The higher the point total, the better the placing.
- The song with the highest point total wins!
- Example of the last vote of 2012 is here (http://www.youtu.be/watch?v=fjue0I4Hyko&t=3h09m22s).

I think Hungary's song is good.

Russia should win. Actually any of the top 4 favorites I would be fine with.

Notice the song name.

No, it's a joke name for the contest since so many countries seem so insistent on "schlager-esque" (slut pop) staging.

The actual space suits are provided by Montenegro's "Igranka". The disco ball is provided by Belarus' "Solayoh". The starry dress by Moldova's "O Mie" and the giant by Ukraine's "Gravity".

The initial rehearsals are over! Last 6 days have been pretty entertaining.

The rehearsals are rushed and have very poor audio and video quality. Most of them don't even have the proper backing singers or costumes. If you don't mind spoilers, here are the performances that I think are the best:

Georgia
Nodi Tatishvili & Sophie Gelovani - Waterfall (Georgia) impression of second rehearsal (http://tinyurl.com/bmze8h5)

Denmark
Emmelie de Forest - Only Teardrops (Denmark) Impression of second rehearsal (http://tinyurl.com/crpan3r)

Russia
Dina Garipova - What If (Russia) Second Rehearsal (http://tinyurl.com/cwm4a3c)

Moldova
Aliona Moon - O Mie (Moldova) Second Rehearsal (http://tinyurl.com/cwxfez4)

Norway
Margaret Berger - Feed You My Love (Norway) impression of second rehearsal (http://tinyurl.com/brte2nl)

..and my absolute favourite staging..Azerbaijan
Farid Mammadov - Hold Me (Azerbaijan) Second Rehearsal (http://tinyurl.com/d8dsxbm)

The first semi-final is next Tuesday! We will get a chance to see the finished products with proper audio and video quality then.

The jury rehearsal for semifinal 1 is over, marking the beginning of Eurovision 2013. It is from this rehearsal that the juries will vote from, so every performance counts.

Denmark's performance:

Tomorrow is the first semifinal!

Tuesday, May 14th 2013 at 9pm CEST, 8pm GMT, 3pm EDT!
The semifinals last about 2 hours, and the grand final is 3 hours long.

If you don't live somewhere lucky enough to have a broadcaster broadcast it, you can watch it live here (http://www.eurovision.tv/page/webtv). During the contest, the servers will be busy, so get there early! I missed Loreen's second semi-final performance by accidentally refreshing the page last year. :(

Get hype and enjoy!

The qualifiers from the first semi final! (random order)

Moldova
Lithuania
Ireland
Estonia
Belarus
Denmark
Russia
Belgium
Ukraine
The Netherlands

I must admit, I expected Lithuania (I still hate the song) to come last and Estonia to not qualify. So I was pretty far off. :P Surprising that Serbia didn't make it. Sad that Montenegro didn't make it also.

I have to reiterate that Lithuania should have gotten last. I'm not surprised Austria didn't make it but I would have liked it to. And I'm glad Estonia did qualify.

Qualifiers in random order:

Hungary
Azerbaijan
Georgia
Romania
Norway
Iceland
Finland
Malta
Greece

Can't say I am happy that Hungary got in, and Iceland over Israel. Both of the songs are absolutely awful. :P Sad Albania didn't make it, it was way better than Armenia, but Balkan power has simply died. Almost all ex-USSR nations have made it to the final, with Latvia being the only one that hasn't. Ultimately I got 7/10 correct, worse than the last semi final.

Saturday, May 16th 2013 at 9pm CEST, 8pm GMT, 3pm EDT!
The grand final is 3 hours long, might be slightly longer due to an obscenely long interval act.

During the Eurovision season there is 2 main polls, the OGAE (fan) polls and the punter (betting odds) polls.

OGAE poll:

Betting odds:

However during the last week a new one comes up, the media poll:

One of my favourite parts of Eurovision is the voting scandals the week after. So far this week:

1. Azerbaijan's broadcaster/government reports the jury and televote should have given Russia points.
2. Montenegro's broadcaster reports the EBU-reported results don't reflect what Montenegro submitted (televote/jury).
3. Lithuanian media source has video of two Russian speakers offering to pay Lithuanian students to massively televote for Azerbaijan
4. Ukraine points goes from 12 in the semi to 0 in the final from a couple of countries.
5. The Moldovan jury ranked Romania 1st, despite giving them only 10 points.

(the 4th point happens all the time, so I guess Ukraine is just hurt at the 3rd place)
