Title: What's your favorite new thing to do with the beta?
Post by: Dan Dixon on November 14, 2009, 02:01:22 AM
I like to open up 'Our Solar System' (quick shortcut is Ctrl+2) and then use the move tool on the orbiting planets to shape new orbits.

- It's also fun to adjust the orbital elements (sma, ecc, inc, peri...).
- Try this: click and drag up or down in a textbox to shift the numbers without typing.

Improved Accuracy

And when you're looking at the projected orbit of a moon or planet, press Shift+S to turn on the more accurate calculation mode called RK4 (from the original Euler method). Pause the sim, hover over a planet, and toggle this on and off. You can see the path shift from decaying spirals (wrong) to full ovals (right).

Eventually the plan is to make the RK4 mode the default mode (and call it something else).

Also... currently dust still uses Euler even if RK4 is turned on.

I like how it automatical orbits.

It's also really easy to move and rotate galaxies.

1 - Open up the simulation "Galaxy Collision - Milky Way / Andromeda"
2 - Then use the move and rotate tools to reconfigure the simulation.

I also like the easy orbital parameter editing.

well for sure i love the orbit stuff how easy is it so set a orbit up now and in this 1 you can change it in every way for elliptical to 90 degrees of all other orbits to make awesome systems

its much easyer to change every thing now

i know i give feedback on   the arrows not staying there now i know i just got to hold and drag up or down to get it to change and its really accurate too

its much easyer to insert stars planets that orbit them and moons that orbit them im loving it so far

iv had some weird things happening with dust orbit gos all funny sometimes but looks cool

ill take a pic next time it happens and post it for all to see

Press F12 to take a screenshot (saved in (My) Documents\Universe Sandbox\Images),
Press Ctrl+F12 to take a screenshot with the UI visible.

I'd love to see some screenshots.

Wait... is it in the ver. 1 folder?

Yes. Images are saved in the same folder as version 1.

The auto-orbit function is fun.
However I suggest you to include some sort of switch which can turn auto-orbiting off and maybe a manual orbiting tool so users could create double star systems. It might be also worth to think of adding a simple function
which will make a satellite rotate around an attractor in the other direction.

select the object you want to turn in the other way change inc option to 180* this will get your moon etc to turn around the object in the opposit direction

peri changes the start position of the turn i think so if you have it on a camped orbit compared to everything els in the system you can move the point it interacts with liner point of everything els

and i managed to make a double star system in seconds with this system on and i even have Jupiter on a really close orbit around the 2

Yes the new automatic orbits are great! now it's possible to create a star system with dozens of planets :)
Edit mode is good too.
User interface makes adding moons/planets much more efficient.

Also the new glow effect is great especially on the sun.

Select a star and the main properties tab to see the Temperature and Luminosity properties.

Open up Our Solar System and click on the Sun, for example.

Where is that?
Click on a star, and in the bottom of the new menu that appears when you just left click objects.

Favorite thing in the beta.. ???

Creating complex star systems with multiple moons per planet.  ;D
The ease of placing new worlds is much better.

Also the ability to change sun temperature and resizing tools are good.
