Title: Upgrades & Updates: The Future of Universe Sandbox
Post by: Dan Dixon on November 19, 2012, 11:40:26 PM
Short Version | tl;dr

I had promised everyone who owned a copy of the current version would get a free upgrade to the major new version of Universe Sandbox, but that was in late 2011 and many things have changed. The new version has become more complex and costly than originally conceived and the project now employs seven people. I think the promise has handicapped the long term future of the software and so I’ve decided that the new version will no longer be a free upgrade for existing users.

Long Version

Earlier this year I stated, on more than one occasion, that anyone who has ever purchased Universe Sandbox would get the upcoming new version for free. Since that time, many things have changed, and I think this promise has handicapped the long term future of the software.

Let me try to take you through my thinking...

In November 2012 I shared a weekend with an amazing group of people devoted to social justice and leveraging their privilege for lasting, positive change in the world. My take away from the experience was: How do I use my opportunity to make the most positive change in the world?

I want to continue to develop Universe Sandbox for years to come and use it to inspire learning about our amazing universe. I feel that this is, and will be, my life’s work, and I’m so lucky to be in the position to work full time on something I love and care about so much.

I feel conflicted that I have to charge for Universe Sandbox at all; I think knowledge should be free. I’d give it away to everyone if I was independently wealthy, but I’m not. And no longer is this project all about me. There are six other people who work on this project, whose income is paid from the sales of the original version. So I think it is fair to ask those who can support Universe Sandbox to do so, in order for us to provide it to those who can’t.

When I promised upgrading everyone for free, this is what I was thinking:

What’s happened since:

Reasons to charge for the new version:

I’ve been debating what to do about this for months and have discussed it with friends, family, colleagues in the video game industry, and the development team. I’m very sensitive to making people feel slighted in reversing course and not updating everyone for free, so If you feel wronged, please let us know and I’ll make it right.

I hope that you’ll understand the decision to not upgrade current users to the new version for free. Please let me know what you think in the comments below.

As long as its a reasonable price like 15 or 20$ or something, then yeah.

If it were 70 bucks, I'd still buy it, but that's pretty expensive, especially so for the international Ubox fans. Might want to get input from them due to the differences in currency.

Wait, the beta will still be free though, right?

Ditto what smjjames said, I am ok with buying the next US as long as I know how much I have to save up, it will take me some time to do that but it will be worth it.  I completely agree with you Dan on all your points, you have to pay your people and you cant do that when the new users are paying 75% of the normal price for the game, it would be unfair to the ones who paid in full when they (the 75% off users) get the upgrade for free as well and didnt invest as much into the project.  I can also understand the complaints that will follow, it is natural to feel what they will be feeling when something is taken away from them, especially the people (like me) that do not make anywhere near a normal income it will be difficult and you may lose the support of these people.  In the end I think this will be a better way forward and will reduce friction in your company since it is money that moves this product now, it takes more than just you (Dan) to get this going now in a reasonable time frame and that costs money.

This is understandable and reasonable Dan. I don't mind paying again for the new version of the program, because at least I know I'm funding the developers the money they need to make this new update awesome. Good luck on the new update!  ;)

No worries... it's safe to assume the price of v3 will be reasonable and not $70.

I don't really mind paying (and it seems many others don't as well), I think it should be similar to the first version, maybe a pay what you want starting at 75-85% of what you'd prefer and allow people to pay for more? And then maybe individual cases can pay less if they can't pay the minimum for whatever reason?

It's the right thing to do. How else can you keep US afloat?

But now I'm shattered, since I cannot make online purchases. That's the reason I pirated US2 in the first place. (http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,629.msg57866.html#msg57866) Then I was lucky enough (LOTS OF DRAMA INVOLVED) to have someone else use their card to buy it for me ($25), then pay them back with real cash.

Since I am in Australia, does that leave posting money out of the question (When I can spare money), since you guys use different currency? I'm crossing my fingers there will somehow be an on-disc-in-store version.

You have my word, I won't pirate US3, since I know how hard hitting it is for you guys. I respect you all too much for that.

I agree !

The social role of Universe Sandbox is already being done by their release free to schools.

I fully agree that the private interest of the software allows charging for the use of the product given the work involved in making this piece of art.

I'm fine with this. However, a bit disappointed that I won't come home and find the update having arrived.
Is there anyway for current owners to get a discount so not to completely change what was promised, the reason I say this is that many here are either not old enough to have a job or earn money to pay for a full price game.

However, I do completely understand why you changed the conditions given your current situation regarding the expense of the game development. I would be fine paying for this update, glad even so that more great work could come from your development team. For as much use as I have gotten out of the game so far, I would be fine paying for many more hours on a superior version of the game with so many new features.

I cannot make online purchases. That's the reason I pirated US2 in the first place.

If you have no way to buy it and you pirate it, how is that a lost sale?
If you could buy it without hardship, but pirate it instead, well... that's not cool.

I'm crossing my fingers there will somehow be an on-disc-in-store version.

Probably not. That said... I sent you an email.

... many here are either not old enough to have a job or earn money to pay for a full price game.

To be fair, Universe Sandbox is not a full price game. Skyrim is a full price game. That said, if you have no way of buying the new version of Universe Sandbox, let me know and we'll work something out. I don't want money to get in the way of young minds exploring the universe... which is largely why we've just recently announced that Universe Sandbox v2 is free to schools all over the world via Steam for Schools (http://www.teachwithportals.com/).

If there is DLC I plan to like boycott it or something. I will not pay in order to use the select tool or something stupid.

Ehh, I don't see any DLCs being released for Ubox 3. It's a program, not a game. What are they going to patch, brown dwarfs and neutron stars?Psh

Dan said that he doesn't want to do downloadable content for planets and stuff like that or even DLC at all.

@tuto: you don't need to pay for normal patches and updates, which arent defined as DLC anyway.

I doubt that, it probably will be either in the finished program (hate calling U.S. a game, its so much more) or as a patch/update later, DLCs are really only reserved for games that want to milk the cow for all its got, then beat the dead horse to an even deader death after the cow ran dry.

I was exactly saying that. A DLC for Ubox is not going to happen.

I have one good idea for an expansion pack that I’m really excited about (and think you will be too), but it’s still a long way out from being developed, released, and beginning to generate revenue.

But it's definitely not Day 1 DLC (Downloadable Content) meaning that it won't be released until months after the release of Universe Sandbox 3. It's something we've talked about, but no one has yet begun working on it (and won't until after the release).

There's no plan to make some types of stars paid DLC.

I can't say I'm not disappointed, but I understand the (arguably unfortunate) realities of this world.

The main thing that bothers me is that, if I'm looking into this correctly, it's only the new version that will have Mac support, correct?  Although I feel as though I haven't the right to complain given that I did buy the program when it was on sale, I did buy it having been told that there would be a future update to include my primary OS.  I do have a Windows partition, which avoids having to deal with the rarely-functional WINE or Parallels or whatever, but it's still an inconvenience and it's a little disheartening to hear that I'm never going to get that port.

I'll still probably end up buying US3 once it goes on sale; I'm not sure.  Depends on how much the full asking price is and how well it would perform on my computer (US2 isn't great in that regard, at all).

The main thing that bothers me is that, if I'm looking into this correctly, it's only the new version that will have Mac support, correct?

Correct. The engine used by v2 is Windows only and a Mac port of v2 is not feasible. The engine we're using for v3 has support for Windows and Mac (plus other platforms) and we're rewriting it from the ground up.

Yeah... I feel the broken promise most effects those that (probably) only purchased because they thought they were going to get a free upgrade.

Version 3 has become much more than a direct port of v2 which was more how I imagined it would be when I made the promise. Since that time I've brought on an astronomer and a physics expert that are pushing the boundaries of what I imagined was possible to simulate with any sort of realism.

I'll still probably end up buying US3 once it goes on sale; I'm not sure.  Depends on how much the full asking price is and how well it would perform on my computer (US2 isn't great in that regard, at all).

I hope the performance of v3 will be at least as good as v2. Both like as much computational power as you can give them.

it's going to be universe sandbox 4.

Nope... something else. :)

Well I'm just really excited for V3, it sounds really good and I'm more than happy to pay for the new version.
I bought long before any sales or any mention of a V3 (let alone it being free) and whilst it was good to hear that V3 would be free, It's ever better to hear that its going to be a substantial upgrade over V2 (even at a price)!
For what its worth I'd happily pay early to get into the beta  ;).

Keep up the good work! ;D

Thanks for the update on progress, it's refreshing to have an open and frank discussion with developers, I'm anxiously awaiting the next version, and I hope it puts my newly built intel based pc thru its paces.  As I understand it, the new version will be a different application and run alongside the old one?

Dan, thank you for your full explanation about the decision.  I love your program, though I don't use it on a weekly basis, and would be more than happy to purchase the new version when it comes out.  Also keep in mind that some v2 owners (like myself) did not pay 'full price' but got it for just a few dollars when Steam ran its special last year.  You've got me hooked on stardust, sir.  Cannot wait to see what you've got cooked up!

Yeah... we're talking about offering pre-orders that include access to the beta. Perhaps something similar to what Prison Architect or Planetary Annihilation is doing.

Yes.

That sounds like a great idea, it solves the problem of how people get access to the beta as well as opening it to everyone, not just a few who get selected.

To answer your question, well partially, I think Eric or Chris is working on procedural gas giant cloud formation. (Check out the Unite 2012 presentation here, http://video.unity3d.com/video/6958259/unite-2012-creating-the (http://video.unity3d.com/video/6958259/unite-2012-creating-the))
About cloud formation for terra planets, I think Dan said something about him working on that feature, but I'm still undecided whether that's true.

Sign me up for this.  I saw your ideas as they bloomed and I thought 'Naw'.  When you said free update.  I think I even argued against it a little in one post (memory not as good as the search feature, but lazy wins).

Then I saw you were writing on the Unity engine.  And that kind of told me to reconfirm I'd have to pay.  Which was fine by me and my attitude from the start.  A man can't eat on dreams alone.

Since (iirc) you are using the unity engine, are you going to use the preview function for linux support?  I'd love to have UB natively on linux.  :D  And with steam rolling out linux support some time next year probably, what fortuitous alignment.

Don't need to apologize or feel humbled because you have to ask to have money for these people and yourself.  You deserve the money.  You deserve the right to dream.

This. I confess I did only buy this on a whim while looking through Steam sales, but I'd be happy to pay full price, and would've done so had I not seen it on sale. Anything up to $30 would be okay with me; more than that, I'd have to stay with v2 (until I get rich, and I plan to at some unforeseeable point in the future).

'course, I'd be happy to pay at a discount, too :P

To be fair... didn't you only pay $2.50 for it (or was it $5)? Although depending on your situation, that could be a lot of money.

Did you buy it via Steam or this website (in which case it was $20)?

My son bought me the current release for Christmas - not sure what he paid for it but it appears to be an incredible value (@ $20).  I have read this thread and appreciate each respondents financial situation and acknowledge that as a fixed income retiree, I share the concern regarding the outright/upgrade pricing suggested so far.  However, I also see a dedicated team of developers and a passionate community of users which leads me to believe that they are both interested in the future viability/availability of US.  Having said that, I can see where it is necessary for the policy change in order to ensure the continued development of an awesome feature set.  So the market, as it always has, will ultimately decide the pricing of US.  I for one will give strong consideration to upgrading US whatever future pricing policy prevails. Best regards to all for the New Year.

well dan already said sandbox 3 would be less then 70 dollars "he didnt say exact price im guessing it will probably start at 19.95 maybe more"

but what im offering dan is to pay 70 dollars in exchange he enters a legaly binding contact that would gurentee i dont have to pay for any future versions like 4 or 5 if/when released

What I would love to see is a big bang simulation or a star formation placing clouds of hydrogen in an area and increasing time to see the star and or its solar system formed!

Also I paid the 10bucks... Best 10 bucks ive spent in a long time ===) And i'd be happy to spend more on updates! Thanks for all the hard work

Although it certainly is the minority, its amazing how people can feel wronged or deserving a free upgrade for a game that they paid less than $5 for. I mean, seriously? They spend that much on bubblegum without even thinking twice about it.  ::)

I really feel bad for you Dan, your obviously a great guy trying to do the right thing to people. The program that you and your team have made so far has brought hours of fun and knowledge to me and for less than 1/10 what most normal games would cost on steam or anywhere else for that matter.

Don't feel too bad about "wronging" people and going back on what you said. If you really feel bad about it, try doing something that wont cost you money but instead actually help make money and make almost everyone else happy at the same time, like giving anyone who purchased US2 the option to get into an early beta by paying the full price early or something like 10% off.

I wish you the best and looking forward for when US3 comes out.

I honestly had that initial thought too. Im not trying to be insensitive, but if you are a person who can afford expensive things most of the time, then why are you complaining about spending possibly a $20 program in the future?
For other people, they have harder times affording expensive things. Im one of those people, but in my genuine sense I think Dan deserves some sort of payment. So if you can pay, dont complain.
To Dan, Dont take this the wrong way. Not trying to offend anyone, just speaking out my mind.

I agree to paying for the Update - but tow Questions.

1) How Much will it be - if you have any idea ??
I could go to say 50 Dollars, but I am on Benefits, so maybe 65 Dollars is getting a bit high for me.

2) I am running everything on my PC in Windows XP, with a Quad Proecessor  - will it still be Compatible with XP ??

I'm currently considering buying Universe Sandbox, as a somewhat more physics oriented alternative to most space applications (like Kerbal Space Program - which is great fun but not always that accurate). The changes mentioned are influencing my decisions, so I figure I'll tell you what I think about this.

I don't mind paying the Steam price or better yet, paying full price on the website to support the development of this program. It looks like a great program and space simulators are hard to come by, even in the days of the world wide web. I'm not very rich - a student actually - but I'd rather spend some money on supporting a small project like this than on a major AAA title. I also don't mind waiting for improvements and next versions.

I do mind, however, paying full price on version 2 now when version 3 seems to be on the horizon. Paying full price twice in a relatively short time span is just a little too much. I wouldn't mind paying the price of version 3 and getting stuck with version 2 up until then - receiving version 3 upon release - or paying a small amount for version 2 (like 3 or 5 dollars like a lot of folks here) to keep me occupied until version 3 is made public. Paying twice just feels a bit... awkward.

Just my thoughts  :)

There's not a definitive release date for Ubox 3, and if the beta hasn't come out yet, you won't be getting it any time soon.
I don't think Dan should lower the price of Ubox 2. Even if more people could get to buy it, what if the purchases are slightly lower than what it needs to be to meet an equivalent amount of revenue Dan gets for him to pay to his members? (Whoof, what a long sentence)
I wouldn't risk it.

I was under the (mistaken) impression that the release was much closer than it apparently is. I guess the options in that case are to hold out or to buy twice. Since a more distant release date means more gameplay for the current edition, buying twice starts making more sense.

So just wait a few months :)
What is a couple of months compared to the age of the universe, no? ;)

Pricing for the new version has not been determined or announced.

Well, actually it was ~1,3$ (44 rubles / 32 rubles (current dollar exchange rate))
I have not even heard about v3, but even after only 5 mins in game I will definitely buy it. It's just like that - after v3 is out - v2 is no more needed to be here. It's just a dead body in steam library.
No need to be sarcastic, of course ~1,3$ is not a big money to worry about.

If you watched the Unity presentation of Ubox 3, you would know that the team started from scratch on the project. They're also using a different engine for the game, so I wouldn't think it would be feasible to be able to update Ubox 2 with a new game engine.

I just bought US2 through steam yesterday, and I find it very fun. I felt with this the same way when I first play mass effect (it was mass effect 2) the first moment I could travel to planetary systems across the milky way.

At first, I was a bit disappointed about not receiving US3 for free, but checking the video presentation with unity engine, I agree, US3 seems totally better than US2, and I am pretty sure I will pay for US3. (Besides, development is not free and after thinking and seeing the reason, I totally agree)

I have a question concerning future updates, and the implementation of new astronomic objects (for example, the new moons of Pluto, Kerberos, Styx)
Have you any plan to update discovered objects or renamed objects after US3 release? (renamed, I mean when an object is named like 2009TX300 and then it has a mythological/other name assigned)

Also, there is the Gaia mission to be launched this year that will begin to map nearby stars in 3D (its aim is 1 per cent of milky way stars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_%28spacecraft%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_%28spacecraft%29)))

Just got Ubox 2 gifted on Steam and I think it's great! With stuff happening like: increasing masses of bodies takes into account Schwarzschild radius, temperature changes etc.
Though what I really sadly missed were gen. relativistic effects like grav. bending of light - and yo some part even maybe the speed of light limit to grav. effects, but didn't want to be too nitpicky, so it's awesome nonetheless!

@topic
Assuming among those ellusive 'awesome things' you guys are developing for Ubox 3 are some gen. effects, I'd definitely buy the new version, IF...I were able to purchase it. Problem: I don't have a credit card or paypal account (too paranoid). Considering how you're releasing a Mac version, do there happen to be plans of releasing it on the Apple App Store (there I could purchase it)? Or even maybe on Amazon?

Couldn't imagine playing around with anything better when writing my theses paper on black holes!  :D

Thx

Dan, quick question. After v3 is released, once I pay for it, what will happen to the game I currently have on my library? Will v3 appear as a separate game, or will it upgrade v2 and overwrite it?

Also, will you please remove the impossible achievements from v2?

Thanks! :)

Mr. Dan Dixon, I am just wondering if you got anymore news for us like, progress reports, more images of the NEW Universe Sandbox, or whatever news that you can give us at this time. Hope that BETA will soon. Good luck and keep up the good work sir. Yeh for the Universe. :D

wait what!  >:(
Why do people keep on thinking that months, even years of development are not going to cost anything? Small incremental upgrades, sure, but this is a total rebuild and essentially a whole new simulator. Without people paying for it, it could simply not exist.

Considering people easily pay 60 euro for some AAA games that hardly innovate paying less for a proper simulation can hardly be a problem.

I don t have any problem with the fact that i will need to pay for this hardwork.

If you can concentrate on something that you love to do, i m happy with this, because i would like to be able to do so lol.

I would have even donate (if the game was free), but with all the work that you re doing on this simulator its normal that we pay for it. Without it they wouldnt be an other US.

He can't decide WHEN it will be released, he and his team are hard at work making US2 the best it can by adding and polishing some amazing new features while also trying to eliminate every bug and glitch to make the game perfect, if it wasn't already.
