Update on Universe Sandbox for Schools, 2014
We are offering Universe Sandbox free to all those who wish to use it in their classrooms. If you are interested in using Universe Sandbox for educational purposes, please complete this Google Form: Universe Sandbox for Schools (https://docs.google.com/a/universesandbox.com/forms/d/1LjYmAvjcQgOfCZjIHRb-PfgEkibQ09d6fmL2Jk6piZk/viewform).
We will contact you shortly with further information about receiving a free copy for your school.
Please note: This offer is for the original Universe Sandbox, which is available only for PC. We have recently released the alpha version of Universe Sandbox ² for PC, Mac, and Linux: universesandbox.com/2. We are not currently offering any educational discounts for Universe Sandbox ².
(This offer was previously supported by Steam for Schools, a program run by Valve. Unfortunately, they are no longer running this service. While the website is still up and running, they are no longer accepting applications, so do not contact either Valve or Steam about receiving Universe Sandbox for your school. Below is the original forum post about this service.)
STEAM for SCHOOLS now includes free access to Universe Sandbox, interactive Astronomy software from software developer Giant Army. Using a powerful gravity simulator, you and your students can explore the galaxy and manipulate the universe with real physics, real data, real units, real science. There are over 70 simulations both real and fantastical, and built-in tutorials and step-by-step activities.
STEAM for SCHOOLS is free to any school anywhere in the world and also includes Valve's Portal 2 and the Puzzle Maker.
Schools can sign up and learn more here:

Dan is the best news since the creation of the US! I will make a wide divulgation here in Brazil. I believe this is a unique tool for Brazilian teachers that rarely have in hands an educational tool of such quality.
I greatly appreciate your initiative!
Thank you !

I can say the same thing.
Hey, you're Brazilian too? :D

Sim Gabriel ! :D

As a teacher, I love this program. I teach both physics and mathematics in in Utah, and use this as a lab in physics and extra credit for my math class. Thank you for making it so available to the academic community.

Hello there, I'm a student from Worcester Polytechnical Institute and I would like to know how to sign WPI up to receive Universe Sandbox for free.

A teacher or representative of the school needs to sign up on the Steam for Schools website (at the top):

Hi Dan/everyone,
I'm pretty excited that there's a free copy for schools and I have asked for it to be installed at school.
However, I am envisaging that "Steam for schools" will not work on my school's network (due to blocking by Council/ISP of the entire steam server subnet and local policies on PCs restricting application usage which will break steam updating assuming it works as the full Steam client does).
I personally have bought a few copies (am up to 4 now.... 2 x steam, one DRM free and one in April), so I can show it from my personal PC on the IWB, but it doesn't quite achieve the same thing as letting the pupils play God with planets.
I am therefore wondering if it is possible to get a license to use one of the none-steam versions on a school network?
Best wishes
Joe

Thanks for buying all those copies. :)
Officially, the only version that is free for schools is the Steam for Schools version. Unless your school's IT department is completely resistant, hopefully they'll see the advantage in making access possible in order to gain free software.
That said... if it will not work and they're unwilling to make the changes necessary, let me know.

Sim Gabriel ! :D
Hi, I'm brazillian too :p

how about home schooled kids
-
Too bad... Not going to school+no Ubox. What a shame. :'(
-
Why not open to the public free version to us
-
This is not a game again, it is a astronomical software, your mean is not want to let the public know astronomy, why don't you like Google earth stay free?
-
Why not open to the public free version to us
Because.
-
??????????????????????????????????WHY
-
Because Dan and his crew have been working long and hard on this, not to mention been spending hundreds of thousands of dollars producing it. You can't expect something as awesome as this to just be handed to you, right?
-
Hundreds of thousands? Dont assume this stuff
-
:D Yay now students can experience the awesomeness of this game!
-
Honestly, I don't see any use for it schools.

How about physics classes? Idk about you but I think it's a very nice tool for schools. Plus, it's free.... even better.
-
Honestly, I don't see any use for it schools.
I see use for demonstration and maybe some classwork.
Or even as an alternative to the textbook for simple learning like the planet names and sizes.

hello
I am Adam and I am 7 1/2 years old. Please let me know if you are also a child and if you love Universe Sandbox as I do. I love space and playing with the Universe Sandbox. I wonder whether there are any other children playing with the Universe Sandbox? Sometimes I feel alone as my friends do not love space as much as I do. My dad helps me to understand some physics as he is a physicist I am a new member and I hope to find some friends. Best wishes Adam, UK.

Welcome to the forums!
It is unfortunate that your passion for astronomy is not mutual throughout your social life, but I can assure you that this is the place you want to be if you like space.
(Lol edit your post and remove the personal info (age, location, etc) you don't know who or what could use that info for their personal gain.)
