A work-in-progress screenshot of a sun like star in Universe Sandbox 3.
Universe Sandbox 3 is a major update due out later this year for both Windows and Mac. This is a full rewrite of Universe Sandbox in a new 3D engine and will be a free update to everyone who has ever purchased Universe Sandbox through this website or on Steam.
This screenshot represents the work of Georg at IonStar in Germany. He's doing some amazing shader and graphics work.

Amazing. Beautiful work.
-
Me before opening it: Yay, another screenshot
Me after opening it: *lack of words for the screenshot*
-
I agree with the above. :) Amazing work.
-
is it dynamic? (does it move)? it looks nice.
-
Mein gott
Universe Sandbox now seems to be seriously stepping up to the plate now.
this deserves a reaction image.
So awesome it actually burnt me
-
is it dynamic? (does it move)?
Yes. :)
-
AWESOME! :D
is it dynamic? (does it move)?
Yes. :)
What about solar flares and loops?
-
Would this work on a normal computer? Or would it be slow?
-
What about solar flares and loops?
Also animated. :)

It's not actually simulating the surface so it should run just fine. No worries. If you can run the current version of Universe Sandbox (v2) you should have no problem with v3.

Will the textures still be able to be modified? What about inserting a .gif? is this currently a gif? Actually i haven't tried using gifs in version 2
-
Awesome.
*cannot into other words for this*

I tried using a texture that was saved as a .GIF once, it didn't work.
-

Yes. You'll still be able to use your own textures.
You might be able to use gif files in v3, not sure yet.
Is this a gif? No. It's a procedural star texture.
-
What about changing the star's class? Keeping the procedural textures but changing it's colour.
-
I don't think changing the color would be a problem matty.
-
I saw better...... jk it's awsome ;D
-
I think Georg should get a raise... :D
-
I saw the picture and I had no words to describe how.... Shockingly improved the sun looks.
-
Mora PIC!!!!
-
Awesome.

Is there any kind of time line for progress so far we may see? Such as percentage of completion or what has been Improved or added thus far in development? Is there a "Roadmap" of sorts for development? If so what is it?

Its a complete overhaul of the coding, there is a new (and up to date) engine, better graphics, new UI, the works.
They seem to be somewhere between 25% and 50% on the progress bar so to speak.
-
Awesome work, awesome solar flares and texture...
And lol Matty. ;D
As for progress, I don't think you can really put a percentage on how completed it is. It seems very hard to estimate how much time it takes to program something.

Wow this looks amazing! Can't wait! I like the sunspots a lot!
I have a question.
will the solar flares affect the star or anything orbiting the star?
And does it age? you know you could have separate clock for stars to age without affecting anything orbiting it!
-
First words out of my mouth:
"Oh my god..."
Then I thought this looked kinda weired for a moment, but now I can give you a thumbs up. Amazing Epic work.
Yay for solah flares!

Other than technical details involving the magnetic fields, solar wind, unless its a very massive star like Eta Carinae (which I hear nearly rips itself apart with massive CMEs), I doubt it'll affect the star in a way that matters to the simulation.
For flares affecting planets, well, theres the aurorae....
For aging the star, you can't have it age without it affecting things in orbit. It'll change in luminosity as it ages, thus affecting the temperatures of planets. Although given that the timescales involved are long (billions of years for sunlike stars, millions for massive ones) and we can only make the simulation go so fast with planets around it, I don't know....

No I mean a separate aging where it doesn't affect planets, you know it could work like the time acceleration we have now but just to age the star, so it could go supernova or a white dwarf!

:o NEW PANTS! I NEED NEW PANTS, Dan!
Such an amazing EPIC overhaul. :D
I have a question, I know it's not regarding to the sun but for planets, Will there be any form of animation? Like for example, a cloud map on a planet that moves when you look at it?
-
:o NEW PANTS! I NEED NEW PANTS, Dan!
Glad you have extra underwear ;)
-
If in-game the sun textures are just pictures I won't be impressed. I'm really hoping they have animations.
-
Steroidkloud, they are animated.
is it dynamic? (does it move)?
Yes. :)
-
...for planets, Will there be any form of animation? Like for example, a cloud map on a planet that moves when you look at it?
Yes. We're evening talking about differential rotation on the cloud maps. Well I am and so is Eric. Georg (who would be implementing that feature) hasn't chimed in yet. :) Either way... we already have rotating cloud maps, how much more advanced they become before the release is still up in the air.
