Title: Potentially Hazardous Asteroids
Post by: tony873004 on July 14, 2008, 12:16:28 PM
In 2007 there were 796 asteroids classified as PHAs or Potentially Hazardous Asteroids.  Here's all of them:

I can't even find Earth in all this mess, but its there as are the other planets.
This is translated from Gravity Simulator:  http://www.orbitsimulator.com/gravity/articles/pha.html

WOW! what a mess!... lol

super laggy, and super weird shape... also takes a long time to load

is it supposed to look like this?! turned off the labels and cleared the dust casue of the lag.

No... that doesn't look right.
Nor should you be seeing that blue logo in the corner.

I just released a new version yesterday. Have you updated?

And yes... Loading times can be slow for systems with lots of bodies.

If you're still having problems... Load up the system and then send my your logs files. Commenting that you are davidpt and this is the Hazardous Asteroids problem. :)

I can't even find Earth in all this mess, but its there as are the other planets.

You can find the Earth by pressing "Home" and then Page Down 3 times.

This is true... And he's a good guy, no less.

Cool !!

Hey Tony, how you insert so many objects in the simulation Xml file ? One by one ?  ???

... One by one ?  ???

:D Not quite.  That would take forever.  I translated the simulation from Gravity Simulator.  For Gravity Simulator I have a few stand-alone applications that build Gravity Simulator simulation files (*.gsim) for me.  So I get a list of objects, feed them to the stand-alone project, which then contacts JPL Horizons for data, then uses this data to build a simulation file for Gravity Simulator.  Then I use Gravity Simulator to save the simulation as a Sandbox-readable xml file.

Hi Tony !

I use the Gravity Simulator at some time (I used to obtain the orbit of asteroid 2008 BT18 for simulation in the Universe Sandbox however enter the data manually).

What I would like to know, from your information, is how you set the output data from Gravity to the format that is used in XML files of the Universe Sandbox.

Thank you!

I just coded it a few days ago, so its not available yet, as I continue to tinker with it.  If you want a copy early, send me an e-mail.  Otherwise I'll probably release a new beta version in the next week or two.

I am new to Universe Sandbox, Tony. How do I download your PHA file into my Universe Sandbox application?

When I open the file it wont work. It gives me the script though.

I tried to make it work but it wold not get it.

I just tested it again... And it worked.

To open this file in Universe Sandbox, put it here:
My Documents\Universe Sandbox\Systems

Let me know if you're still having trouble.

I still have trouble.

Just save the file into this folder on your computer:
My Documents\Universe Sandbox\Systems

Then in Universe Sandbox from the main menu:
Click on Open, then click on 'My Systems', and it should show up in the list.

It's not obvious that this is how it works. I plan to address this problem in the future.

I made an XML file I copied the info into Systems and nothing exists. Can we just make a downloadable file?

It is a download-able file.

Download this file:
http://orbitsimulator.com/sandbox/PHAsandbox.xml

And move or save that file here:
My Documents\Universe Sandbox\Systems

Then in Universe Sandbox from the main menu:
Click on Open, then click on 'My Systems', and it should show up in the list. Click on PHAsandbox to open the file.

Does that help?

Well, it pops up with the script not a downloadable file. So uhh... not really.

Right click the XML link and select "Save link as" or "Save target as"

This will let you save the file.
