Title: Earth & Moon + Dwarf Moons (That is what I am calling them!)
Post by: Chaotic Cow on March 03, 2009, 08:52:37 PM
So yeah...I thought it would be cool to see the moon have...well moons. I know they should be called satellites
but...I like the sound of "Dwarf Moon" better.

Basically it's Earth and Moon but with many named asteroids orbiting the Moon.

This took me over an hour to do. Only because I did it the old fashion way ... shot asteroids at it till they got pulled in to a constant orbit of the moon.

They all stay within the Moons Hillsphere.

Also: I have named all of them.

P.S. It's really fun to see what a mars like planet does to it when it goes by.

Cool... Dwarf Moons, Dwarf Planets, Dwarf Stars, Dwarf Galaxies..., AND MAYBE DWARF UNIVERSE!?  ;D

Possibly. Smaller Universes orbiting or colliding with bigger ones!

I'm sure that stays under the catagory "Space Debris"

Wait a sec...... shouldn't Dwarf Moons orbit a planet??

No.

Noone said Moons can't have Moons.

Can moons have moons?
Yes, but they are typically unstable.

We find strange moons with sub-moons (as i'm calling them) because we usually don't see them, as the "Sub-moons" aren't been seen yet. However nothing say they cannot exist. (think about a miniature system Sun - Earth - Moon, orbiting another star...)

Simply we haven't find them yet because they are, teoretically, really unusual (try to visualise the hill sphere of the moon and look how small it is)

EDIT (after realizing that Dan replied already)

DHO!!!

Awesome link Dan.

Not sure though if the Dwarf Moons in the system I made is unstable. They all seem good.

Then again I have yet to run the system for a very long time.

Then again I have yet to run the system for a very long time.

I suspect that 'unstable' could mean that the body could remain in orbit for thousands of years without any problems. In other words, it's unstable on the order of 10000-1000000 years (I'm guessing at these numbers).

And admittedly, Universe Sandbox isn't accurate enough to simulate the stability of a body over that kind of time period (as the math that Universe Sandbox uses is inaccurate by definition).

What can be said is that your 'dwarf moons' are stable in the short term, just like satellites that humans have put in orbit around our Moon.

I wonder if it's possible to make it unstable. Via editting something in US (Not XML since I have no clue how to do XML) which will slowly but surely cause some form of unstable-ness.

If you have an Idea on how I could do that..do explain.

If the orbits of the 'dwarf moons' were a bit larger they would be more directly influenced by Earth's gravity making them more unstable.

In an upcoming version of Universe Sandbox you'll be able to directly edit the orbital elements values which would let you easily change the semi-major axis.

Currently... you can give each body a little more velocity which will cause the orbit to expand. Right click and just bump up the 'dwarf moons' velocity a little.

sun, like planets
and planets, like moons
