Title: [BUG] Fix the Earth textures in Universe Sandbox 2
Post by: Cesare on December 08, 2017, 11:47:26 AM
When adding the default Earth into a new simulation from the Planets category, the continents have a strange appearance that some of the Earth's oceans have been drained away. Australia and New Guinea are connected by land because the sea level is too low. That is not suppose to happen. The Gulf of Mexico, has an area where the sea has retreated and other areas where the sea level is too high, like in Florida. Most of Florida is under water. England and France has distorted shapes and the sea level is too high in some areas and too low in others.

The overall textures of Earth in Universe sandbox 2 looks wrong and they must be fixed. Take a good look at the images below which I have taken from Universe Sandbox 2 - Update 20.1.3:

The surface textures of the Earth, close up, in Universe Sandbox 2 are extremely fuzzy. You can see the fuzziness when zooming into the Earth at a very close distance. You can clearly see the fuzzy textures on the screenprints of the Earth which has been taken from Universe Sandbox 2 - Update 20.1.3.

Universe Sandbox 2 has plenty of bugs like this which must be fixed as soon as possible.

The odd land shapes are due to the numbers in the displacement mapping being so close as for small errors to be visible (Not sure why they don't just use higher quality heightmaps or use more displacement but okay)
Also, the fuzziness is due to the limited number of pixels in the planet texture and is something they can't really get rid of unless they add procedural detail generation but if they did that it would immensely slow down the physics calculations.

They have to do something about this because the shape of landmasses does not look right because of fuzziness. The other problem is that in some areas there are bodies of flood water where there is land and in other areas the seabed has been drained.

The fuzziness is because of the pixelated nature of the planet textures. You can tun the quality of them up but only to a certain point.
I understand. That is caused by errors in the heightmap accuracy or the water shader, not sure which though. I think its a combination of both though because for me there are gird-ish shorelines when it's not sure where to put the shoreline due to there being a large area where the same value is considered "shoreline"...stuff like this is just to be expected from a program that allows you to change the sea level on a heightmapped surface and is still in alpha.

Will the fuzziness and the sea level shoreline problem be fixed soon?

I hope that this bug will be fixed once it for all in Update 21.

Wow way to bump a thread from last year THAT YOU MADE.

I am not bumping or joking. I hate this glitched Earth surface. The Earth's texture must be fixed as soon as Update 21 comes out. Have you noticed that the Earth looks much better and more realistic in Universe Sandbox 1?

Yes you are,  bumping is adding a post to a thread just to get it back to the top without adding any real content which is basically what you did.

I hate this glitched Earth surface.

Why? It's not that horrible,  I don't get it.  It's not as big of a deal as you're making it out to be...

The Earth's texture must be fixed as soon as Update 21 comes out.

Not everything has to be done IN THE NEXT UPDATE!!! If they made everything work in the next update the program would be finished and that would be the last update ever, which would mean we would have to wait years for it and I think most people here are a little too impatient for that. Including me.

Have you noticed that the Earth looks much better and more realistic in Universe Sandbox 1?

Yes,  I have noticed,  that's because that version doesn't have dynamic planets. what you're seeing is a static texture that never changes and can never change unless you edit it yourself,  meaning yes it looks nice but you can't change the sea level and it doesn't have climate like Universe Sandbox  2  allows you to have .

The reason why I don't like the glitched Earth surface in Universe Sandbox 2 is because I like perfect graphics.

Yeah but its not possible atm with US2 sorry to tell you, it would cause the game to be unplayable due to lag. Personally I'd rather have more depth and realism to the sim than some fancy graphics. Lets focus on that please and forget the perfect graphics. Wouldn't you rather see new materials and atmospheric gases with ability to tweak them i.e. a methane atmosphere or nitrogen or what have you.

I would like to have a perfect balance between good performance, better graphics and more materials without causing lags.

Recently, there has been an update that improved the colors, appearance and performance of supernovas that improved the overall performance of supernova visuals and graphics. It is possible to improve both graphics and performance at the same time.
