Title: I wonder what my alien character's birthday is?
Post by: ahoop on September 22, 2015, 08:25:50 PM
He's supposed to have been born on July 22, 1996, which would make him 19 now. But the months, days, and years on his planet are shorter, and I don't know on which his birthday lies: Days are 22.6 hours long, months (there are eight in a 'year') are all 28 days long, and years are 224 days long. I don't think I should go any further to hours, minutes, or seconds. I asked the above somewhere else and kept getting his age (around 32 on Dagan) and not his birth date, which would probably have been even harder to figure out without the info below :(.

figure out how many days it's been since your calendar started (earth time) convert that using the length of your calendar year in earth years

say it's been 500 earth years and your calendar is 300 days long multiply 500 * (365.25/300) to get how many of your calendar years

convert the remaining decimal into days by multiplying by how long your year is in your days

say you have 100 days and it has been idk something.3 years, then it's .3 * 100, 30 days

figure out what that number means in your calendar from there

Ok, I've been trying to do this for a while, because I'm an idiot who can't math, and I was going to say you might not have elaborated enough, but you updated lol. Thank you anyway! Does this mean the alien was born on the 4th month, on the 15th day?

I've been stressing way too much on this -__-

i'm not sure, I didn't calculate it through

if you'd like to describe what calculations you did, i'd be happy to check them

that way if it's not correct i can tell you where you went wrong

365 - 203 = 162 / 365 = 0.4438356164383562 * 100 = 44.38356164383562
0.4438356164383562 * 224 = 99.41917808219179

Earth year minus days from Jan 1 to July 22, 1996; multiplied by 100 to get the percent of the Earth year from Jan 1 to July 22. Multiplied by one Dagani year to get ~99 Dagani days. Used the calendar I created to find the 99th day. Sure hope its correct, it took me a while :/

you seem to have done the latter part right, but where you started is just going to get you a random number

you have two starting options, you can calculate from the beginning of your calendar (year 0) or you can calculate from now

this way is a bit more complicated but you have the information in the topic this way:
if you want to calculate from today you can figure out how many earth years there have been since July 22, 1996 (in decimal form)

anyway that number will be around 19.27

then you have to convert from earth to dagani years, so take your number and multiply it by the conversion factor (earth days in earth year/earth days in dagani year), which would be 365.25 divided by some number, I believe it's not 224, as that is dagani days per dagani year, if i am reading that correctly. so you have to calculate how many earth days are in a dagani year (i think 210.9?)

so that would be 19.27 * 365.25/210.9 (or whatever numbers) = 33.37

round this number down and subtract from the current dagani year to get the dagani year of his birth
then, you take the decimal part of the result and subtract it from 1 (since we are working backwards), in this case it's about .63

what this does is it gives you: one year minus the amount of the year from birth to the end of the year, so this gives you the amount of the year before he was born. multiply this number by how many dagani days are in a dagani year, to get how many days have passed

.63 * 224 = ~141

from there you can find out the date by looking at the calendar
