Here's my first ever city from CSL from some time ago, it's quite messy and traffic is a nightmare (and thus I never really finished it + school), but for a first city it was a decent attempt.

With community interest in C:S suddenly back, that means "interest" in my spaghetti ramps are back. I present to you a 10 picture guide on creating your own spaghetti interchange. Difficulty: very easy!
1) Pick out a boring old interchange to upgrade. We're going to upgrade this one into a 5 way junction.

2) Clean out the area, in this case I'm just moving the railroad tracks. Then, lay out the "approach", where the highways will be on the leadup.

3) Connect the highway stubs together however you desire.

4) Time to start with the ramps! To make it simplest for us to make sure every direction is covered, I do one freeway direction at a time. After creating the ramps make sure that the initial direction can head into n-1 (in our case, 4) different directions! We'll start with the east to west route.

At this point it's usually easiest to do the flyovers since there isn't much in the way. It's easier to wiggle things around on the ground later on to avoid support pillars.
5) Now we'll do west to east.

Due to the nature of our junction, I'm able to only have one ramp into the northerly direction.
6) Now is south east to north.

It's usually at this point that tunnels become necessary. Also note the ramp for the northbound to westbound, it can be used for both oncoming freeways. When doing this I made sure to leave plenty of space for merging to avoid for traffic calamity there.
7) Now for south west to north.

When possible I try to avoid too many junctions on the main highways themselves. I prefer to have them on the ramps, as you can see I did with the northbound to westbound ramp on the middle right.
8 ) And lastly, south bound.

Because of the type of junction, as long as I have all of the exits prior to the split, I only need one ramp for each. You might notice the new and ridiculous flyover heading into the west. Yes, that's a 4th level bridge. yes, that's the highest I've ever done. yes, normally that would be a tunnel. I just wanted to do something fun and new :P

yeah the paper the article darvince linked cites uses this very simplified model of traffic which definitely doesn't substantiate the article's claims nor carries over to the real world

alright so i finally bought the game and my first city is a huge mess:
1. half my city is in danger of flooding and i had to raise the terrain into an earthen dam because i was producing so much sewage
2. all my powerplants are safeguarded from said flooding by me building a 10 meter tall canal wall around them
3. it took me a really long time to realize the north half of my city was completely disconnected from the south half of the city. then it took me a bit longer to figure out how to build elevated crossings. of course since there's only 4 lanes connecting two halves of the city, it immediately became super congested
4. built bus stations, lost a lot of money. built taxi stands, lost even more money. then i built a metro system with 3 stops which goes between the north and south parts of the city. it's ridiculously popular and manages to break even.
5. giving my health department a higher budget meant my cemetarys could handle 10 deaths at a time instead of just 3. that helped a lot
6. the north half of my city is dense and high-tech. the south half -- the original half, is pretty shitty if i do say so myself. actually i'm pretty sure half of the businesses in south-city shut down after i built office buildings and educated everyone
7. there is literally like 8 elementary schools right next to each other in north city
8. somehow managed to dry up two entire rivers while trying to pump enough water into my city

in order to be sustainable, i am emptying all my landfills and cemetaries into incinerators and crematoriums

current dead people: 70k

so in theory this means that all my dead people problems will be taken care of like in 1 year, whereas garbage will take 20 years to empty itself. i'm going to run the game while i go to work so i don't have to sit through that shit
actually probably less than 20 years since my city population will probably take a dive due to the fact that i am clogging up all my roads with garbage trucks and emptying all my landfills
