Purchased this morning & installed. Startup results in a black box and spinning beach-ball, nothing more. No high CPU usage, etc. Only way to stop it is to force-quit.

In most cases the fix is to disable the steam community overlay.
To do this, go to the following menu options, after right clicking on the game in your library.
View → Settings → In-Game → Enable Steam Community In-Game (remove tick)

That (turning off Steam overlay) solved the issue. I'll look into the gathering of logs.
As a side note (if you want to pass it on to the guys at Valve), that same "fix" also made Lunar Flight work.
Same symptoms as Universe Sandbox, but worse in that once started, you could not exit without a power-off (no keyboard interaction, etc).

It seems to only happen on certain Macs, and it affects other Unity engine games. I'm unsure if it's a Unity issue, or a Steam one, or even a problem with Mac OSX drivers. Hopefully the logs will help shed some light on things.
