Title: Alpha 10.1 now available - August 28, 2014
Post by: Dan Dixon on August 28, 2014, 05:38:39 PM
If you already own Universe Sandbox ², just run Steam to update to the latest version.

Or you can buy Universe Sandbox ² here:
http://universesandbox.com/buy/

What's new?
We addressed issues involving temperatures of planets, made some adjustments to planetary collision, and improved some of the user interface interactions.

Complete List of Updates (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TTsJL-ddM_i5RjfnQV5_R-hocRCin6hxAiCuVlytRtA/edit#heading=h.163gqkew9axy)

Let us know what you think! And please report any problems either with the in game feedback tool or by starting a new thread...

Haha, why is the 'add random moon' and 'add random small moon' under tha "Planets" category?

Because of a mispelling huppy4
Also did i just notice or is it new that when fragments cool down to 600 celsius they turn into planets if they are large enough?

My mistake... close Steam, reopen it, update will download. Fixed.

I'm amused someone noticed that, but yes. The fragments become bodies over time now. The transition is rough, but it will get better.

Is it me or do collisions seem kind of funky in 10.1? High speed collisions and asteroidal bodies seem fine, but with larger sized bodies (Ceres and up), things go a bit odd when it gets to lower velocities or I'm not sure. Also happens when the colliding bodies are forced to slow down lower than 1 km/s.

It also happens more at lower timesteps like 10 sec/s

Edit: Ceres and Earth works fine at 1m/s, but at 10s/s it behaves a bit oddly.

Edit2: It might be that I'm seeing the 'gradual collision' thing. Or maybe I'm just expecting the collider to actually fragment and shatter when it's not doing it graphically.

For low speed impacts, you are correct in that an effect is missing in that the pressure wave from the impact should travel out and shatter the bodies. For a high velocity impact like 10km/s its interesting to note that the collision moves faster than the shock wave would (speed of sound in rock), so there would be very little effect away from the impact location... initially.

The scattering issue is a larger one... in the current mode a planet is a sphere. Also when it collides. Thus there is no fragmenting of the general body shape. In the SPH mode, as you can see on some of the videos here https://www.youtube.com/user/greenleafdevelopment  this is implicitly supported. That's actually the whole point of using SPH vs FVM FEM etc.
We are, however, looking at solutions to this for the basic mode.. or fixes, as it should probably be termed.

And whenever i collide something with jupiter, even if it collides against a 10 jupiter mass planet, jupiter "wins"(the other planet dissapears, but jupiter looses half of its mass)

Gas giants still don't heat up when an object collides with them. That still hasn't been fixed.

Same for the gas giants not changing their mass nor diameter when there's a huge plume of gas spouting out of them

They do lose mass, but veeery slowly

Yeah, Universe Sandbox 2 requires Steam. I tried running it without Steam, and it gave me a message saying that it needs Steam to run.

After the collision of an asteroid or planet and the like from another planet (for example), where there is water. Should in fact form a shock wave or a firestorm, tsunamis, tidal waves !!! For example here are the videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kECNdFCF5YY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxWHm8V4lZo

I love these things and I hope that all this will be implemented in the near

And yes, when will be 3d craters?

I also found a bug! When I reduced the temperature of the sun to -200, the earth at the same distance from the sun (about 150 million) quietly keeps the temperature (13-19 C), and should have long freeze. I even tried to speed up the time for the next 100 years, it's still the same temperature of the earth and remained !!!

What are you talking about? All these are already in Universe Sandbox/Are being developed.

Do you need steam to update or is there another way if you didn't buy it thru steam?

There may be a standalone version available in the future, but currently Steam is required. When you purchase Universe Sandbox ² through our website, you receive a Steam code. It then behaves like any other game purchased through Steam.

Ok thanks so much. One thing I've never used steam before so where do I put the steam code and how do I open the game then?

You'll be emailed a link to a page that has your Steam code. From there you click the Steam button at the top, then follow the instructions to create a Steam account and download the software.

Once your account is linked, fire up Steam and you'll see Universe Sandbox ² in your library. Click the install button and you're good to go.  Steam is by default set up to automatically download updates, so you'll receive the new alpha versions as soon as they're available (as long as you're connected to the internet).

If that's at all confusing (it sounds more confusing than it is), PM me and I'll walk you through it.

It's really nice to see the progression and development of the alpha. I feel guilty to not play it as often as I used to. Nonetheless, great job Giant Army, and keep up the great work!

I have to wonder how exaggerated these videos are. Maybe not the first, anything able to neatly punch through our crust like that probably would send rock vapour around the globe. but the first, its like the atmosphere isn't fluid and allows it like metals conduct sound. I wonder what the real effects are of something like this, but it seems implausible that these walls of fire would be possible in our atmosphere. Air isn't empty space, and mixes with other gasses similarly to fluids. You try getting a wall of fluid to pass through another fluid.

Yes, but the shock wave of the collision strips the atmosphere similarly to the way the debris are thrown into space.
