Title: Questions for Giant Army
Post by: Xriqxa on May 03, 2014, 04:07:01 AM
Post your questions for Dan and Co. about the new Universe Sandbox here.
Please, only legit and questions that you are sure have not been answered.
My 2 questions:
How does the Random Planet system work? Do you have a bunch of pre-created planets that you just categorize and then just let the system pick one?

I really like how ice forms and recedes depending on temperature at the poles and highlands, but just one question. Antarctica is made up of several small subcontinents/islands joined together by ice. Is this true in US2?
(In short, when Antarctica melts, does it turn into many islands?)

I can answer the second one for them
You only asked for Antarctica but I took the liberty of taking pictures of both ^^

pretty sure they create a planet and don't have pre-created ones

Oh. Thanks, I think that Giant Army needs to implement that soon.

pretty sure they create a planet and don't have pre-created ones
Mmm, maybe. But think about it, that can create some pretty screwed up planets.

Why do you not check other posts!? This forum saves peoples ideas for a reason. Anyway, since I'm here, I think it will be about 20-30 dollars. Yeah, that sounds reasonable.

Enough is enough Xriqxa! You wanted a thread for people to ask the devs questions and when they do you give out to them? Its bad form, and why dont you take your own advice for once and pm the devs instead of making a thread about it? Stop being a hypocrite and stop lashing out at members.

And for the devs, are we or are be going to be able to bind our own keys to do specific commands? e.g. Press Alt+T and it explodes the largest body in the system?

Nope. Steve is totally right. You may have read all the posts in the last few weeks, but you can't expect a new member to know what has and hasn't been asked.

Why do you not check other posts!? This forum saves peoples ideas for a reason.

This is just rude. I don't care what question FenX2014 asked.

Sorry...

You have nothing to be sorry about. I'm sorry you were berated for asking a question.

The person that needs to apologize is Xriqxa to you.

Yep. Exactly what Stevoodran said. This is not the first time and I will not ask you again Xriqxa.

Cool... Yeah, never thought about that. Would be especially heful with simulating spacecraft on journeys to planets. Like detecting a collision course and being able to display the time or length of time until it arrives. Awesome, love the idea.

Does the new Universe Sandbox have better support for "contact" binary stars? I know it's rather niche to actually depict that rather than a merged result, but what the existing Universe Sandbox does is very underwhelming for what's otherwise an impressive concept.

Currently, as soon as the two stars have touching edges, they instantly merge into one (well, the other collision mode isn't relevant to the intention). To at least get the aesthetic, I previously would get a very close binary orbit, turn those stars into dust so the dust preserves that orbit, then add a single star at the center with the combined properties but a custom model that represents being two stars. That was a decent representation, but lacking actual simulation of the involved properties is less exciting.

Since the most accurate depiction of that is all about the gases of the stars, I'll also ask out of relevance is it possible to do that ever popular depiction of black holes absorbing gases off a star?

Hey if we create a planet tidally locked to a star, will the night side will be frozen like this ? :

I understand what you mean.

Sadly, no. The closest we have come to such are comet trails caused by an elliptical orbit, but at the moment, they are just decorations. They don't decrease in mass or change surface details, just, well, trail off.  I think the effect is impressive, but remember, it's still in alpha, so don't expect too much from now. I'm actually happy with what we have now, and a couple of things that will be implemented in the next Alpha. A lot of people have the same idea and disappointments as you, but this will inevitably be installed sooner or later.

yes
really? My eyes have deceived me once again, this can't be true. Dan+Co, I love you.

Some other questions I have :

1) Why did the Earth atmosphere have changed ?
Look at this :
http://universesandbox.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Universe-Sandbox-20140404-161718-3648x2256.jpg
And this :
http://universesandbox.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Universe-Sandbox-20130429-185438.png
The atmosphere of Earth in the last picture is far more beautiful and realistic than the first.
Why do you have changed it ?!

2) When asteroid collide, is there a state when they are big enough to become spherical ? (Like a little planet)

3) Does the lava created by impact disappear when time pass ?

4) Why Ceres is molten ?

As far as I know, yes.

3) Does the lava created by impact disappear when time pass ?

I would assume so.

4) Why Ceres is molten ?

Probably because it get f'd by a space rock.

The first one is probably from a early Alpha stage. The second one just has the effects of the atmosphere on all the planet, while on the first one the atmosphere is mostly just a ring around the Earth.

Support for ther languages shouldn't be that hard, just hire a few bilingual kids or something in the languages that you want and tell them to convert the typography. For now, you should just work on injecting it with even more GA AWESOMENESS!!!

It would be interesting to see an Arabic or Hindi US, I have to say.

Hey I could be a french translator !! (Well, I suck a little speaking English, but I can translate it quite well !)
I think with more languages (like 10-15) the game will be more purchased, for example, my cousin seen US and he wanted to play it,so I let it play universe sandbox, but he doesn't understood anything !!
Like Xriqxa said, the game should have more langages other than English.  ;D

The first picture shows our new method using volumetric atmospheres.  While the second picture looks nicer from a distance, it didn't work as well when getting close to the planet.  Volumetric atmospheres are a work in progress still and when they are finished they will look more similar to the second picture.

At the moment, I have to say the atmospheres look a little unreal. Perhaps have an effect that only applies a little of the Second Picture effect on the planet and have a full effect on the horizon, it would seem a lot more realistic.

Do stars falling into a black hole create an accretion disk?

Nope, they just sort of pass through each other and the star rockets off at a significant percentage of light speed, with smaller mass and diameter black holes, larger ones just swallow the star. Black holes are well, wierd right now.

No idea if the behavior will change in Alpha 7.

Title: Re: Questions for Giant Army
Post by: Bla on May 22, 2014, 10:53:11 AM
I meant the galactic front-to-back light distortion.
It would basically mean having to continually keep the past of the simulation in memory, and then letting you see more distant parts of it as it were in the past. It would be cool but if you zoom in or out on a galaxy, it looks the same (just takes up more or less of your view), so the program clearly doesn't take into account a finite speed of light visually. So I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

That a stupid way to think, why half of the globe would have the game for free and not the other ?

Is Version 3 out already? I've been on vacation for awhile and this is my first time checking up in a while.

Uhhh, what would the difference be if they didn't delay the official release for US2? Although it would be pretty amusing, even for hardware, to see Nerd3 play this before anyone else.

That's strange... Have you tried restarting your copy?
If this doesn't work, restart your computer.
If this doesn't work, re install the alpha.
If this doesn't work, it's a real issue.
