Title: weird tide thought experiment.

If a world like ours, which depended on the tides to keep nutrients cycling and keep the deeper levels of the ocean from stagnating, had a moon which--in a very eccentric orbit--passed close by the planet every 12 years, would that still be enough of a slosh to keep things moving (albeit with slightly different sea life) or would the sea have turned over by then, do you think?

the plants/animals of whatever would probably adapt or something like that over time even if it was sudden, it could also change. the more sudden the action, the more sudden the change.
