Title: Question to devs on graphics card/vid driver and opencl
Post by: smjjames on December 10, 2013, 10:05:57 AM
I'm thinking of getting a new laptop, so I'm just wondering about the opencl, do all new vid cards and drivers support opencl? I'm going to get NVIDIA card and I looked at the NVIDIA site and that wiki page that was linked and I think they all do, but I'm not 100% sure.

Also, if not all graphics cards or not all NVIDIA drivers support Opencl, then which ones do?

I know I could just email or whatever, but the question could help those others who are wondering about opencl support or graphic drivers in general.

I suggest you find a laptop that is within your price range and then check the specifications.

Here's a great overview of all GeForce products: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_family.html (http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_family.html)

With the latest drivers installed an Intel HD 4000, which is an integrated gfx card, will run OpenCL quite smoothly.
But if you really want some good performance, also for modern games, you'd want to get something that is at least a GeForce650m, preferrably a GeForce7xxm.

Intel HD 4000 drivers can and should be updated regularly, just as you were running a GeForce/AMD card.

What I'm trying to ask is, do ALL new graphics cards support opencl? Also, how do I check whether a graphic card supports opencl?

For the specs stuff, yeah, I have to look at the options available for Dell.

intel supports opencl for intel hd 4000 graphics card: http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-sdk-for-opencl-applications-2013-release-notes (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-sdk-for-opencl-applications-2013-release-notes)

however universe sandbox uses my cpu as the opencl device and it is not possible to switch to the gpu

why is this the case?

I don't know about intel graphics, but there should be a control panel thing for your graphics card and you should be able to force it to use the GPU instead of the CPU.

Anyways, for the Asus that I'm looking at, the options are Geforce GTX 670m (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-670m), Geforce GTX 660m (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-660m), and  Geforce GT 650m (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gt-650m). All three support CUDA, so I assume they'll support opencl as well.

there is such a control panel but there is no such option

If you can, get a 670mx or 680mx, there's also a 675mx but, definitely a geforceMX card, those are more powerful.

Is your budget over $2000?, decent laptops are quite expensive. Well at least the ones I configure anyway :P

Since the program uses opencl, then check out this review of AMD and NVIDIA :

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTQwMDI (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTQwMDI)

From there you can see that AMD is the way to go for opencl,..

As for ur other question of what card support opencl, please see the following:

OpenCL compatibility can generally be determined by looking on the vendor's sites.
For compatibility with the AMD APP SDK: http://developer.amd.com/gpu/AMDAPPSDK/pages/DriverCompatibility.aspx (http://developer.amd.com/gpu/AMDAPPSDK/pages/DriverCompatibility.aspx)

For the NVIDIA, anything that supports CUDA should support their implementation of OpenCL: http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html (http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html)

For compatibility with the Intel OpenCL SDK, look at:
http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/opencl-release-notes/ (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/opencl-release-notes/)
