Title: "No Man’s Sky", a entirely procedural Universe !
Post by: APODman on December 09, 2013, 03:02:51 AM
“Every planet procedural. Every planet unique. Every planet unexplored,”

Made by only four people, No Man's Sky looks insanely ambitious. The planets will have their own ecology and ecosystem, according to Hello Games' Sean Murray, who noted "We're all playing in the same universe." So the stars you see in the sky are actually other planets that other players are playing on. Madness!

"Impressively, every atom is said to be procedurally generated in No Man’s Sky, from the meteors flying through space to the underwater plants found on the planets, all of it undiscovered and waiting for you to pop on over and have a look around. There will be hostile forces acting against you at times, though; that much, we can see a brief glimpse of."

Impressive, maybe a inspiration for future versions of US !

Depends how well they optimise it. I can see the very dense grass and leaves being a problem (for me), but procedural objects seems to be pretty easy to run, for me, Space Engine runs just fine.

Of course these are two entirely different games so we can't know for sure I guess.

Most games have settings that let you pick how dense you want grass/leaves/etc. to be displayed, so I wouldn't imagine that being a problem necessarily. The advertisements, of course, just display the games on highest quality.

But looks amazing. Like Infinity: The Quest for Earth, but definitely closer to a release.

Same, though I'd love a better computer to play it to it's full potential.

Never forget December 9th, 2013, when I saw this thread and discovered No Man's Sky.
Now we're at August 11th, 2016, and there is one day left to go.

This game is fantastic. The lore has so many layers of interpretation along with a sense of ominous  forces at work. The lack of Gas giants a realistic planetary distances bother me from time to time. Although the visuals make up for it. I wont spoil anything yet but. This game is meta. When i have more information i Will make a thread dedicated to uncovering the history of the galaxy we are in. The nature of the Atlas and so on.

I don't think Sean is entirely to blame, they were probably having to work with the PS4 as a benchmark, and couldn't be as ambitious as they originally were because Sony wanted a console release.
Sean was still talking about the game he wanted, rather than what they actually had. And he was under gagging orders about what he could say.

I believe that had they still had complete control, we'd get what we were promised.

Well, hehehe, turns out this game was a MASSIVE DISAPPOINTMENT.
Space engineers, kerbal and etc are better than this. I didnt waste my money and neither should you. Go buy space engineers if you want exploration and combat and discovery.

I'm having fun. It's like space engine in away. I wasn't expecting much really. Nothing, so i guess the hype in a way along with what the devs have said versus what they have actually done is an issue for some. It might get patched. Who know's?

it's a fancier less realistic space engine with biology

High concentration of detail, but hardly any variation of that detail. When you've seen an area of a planet's surface, you've pretty much seen it all, because it just repeats the same sort of formations over and over again, and there's no distinct locations within a planet's entire biome to break it up. Like how earth has defining landmarks, like how even Mars has distinct landmarks.
