This is where the alpha testers will be sharing their ideas and comments about the new version. We've decided to make this board public and be open about our development process.

Welcome!

Minimum system requirements for running Universe Sandbox 2 Alpha:

Graphics:
- DirectX9.0c
- 512MB Video Memory
- Shader Model 3.0

System:
- 1.6GHz dual core
- 1GB RAM
- 1GB free disk space

So, when will alpha testers receive their steam code?
This is just a guess but, when Dan posted his schedule to release Ubox3(2) he said that we were about a month away from the alpha release. he posted that November 6. So I'm guessing early December. But if he wants to send them out earlier, I would be fine with that ;)

Hello everyone! My name is Josh and I registered on the forums a few minutes ago.
I'm one of the alpha testers, and I recently installed it on Steam; so far so good. I'm going to be posting on here on behalf of my experience, as well as reporting any bugs. I'm very excited to be a part of this.  :)

Will all the bugs explained in the feedback sections be ironed out when the beta version becomes available, say January 2014?

i think it's impossible to fix all these bugs in a month; there's the beta version to continue fixing them

I have a question Dan, depending on how easy it is could you change the minimum mass for a brown dwarf to fuse hydrogen and become a star from 93.0 Jupiter Masses to 83.8 Jupiter Masses?
M-Class stars go all the way from M0 at the highest and M9 at the lowest. 83.8 Jupiter masses is supposed to be the point where hydrogen fusion is hot enough in the core, and I have baskets upon baskets of ideas to put into action that involve stars below 93.0 Jupiter Masses.
Thanks for listening, I hope I didn't come off as demanding, I'm just really hoping it makes it into the final release.

The way we were handling stars in the original has been completely overhauled in the sequel... so you should be able to create the lower mass stars you're envisioning.

And your evidence for enough bug reports? Personally I think that we could do with more, the more the merrier  as they say right? Not all alpha users are submitting regular bug reports, myself included since my leaving cert is coming up.

i'm new to this universe sandbox thing. when this new version comes out, do we have to pay for the new version? or is it an update, where you just buy the game and every time there's something new like this, it'll update?

i was planning on buying what there is now, but i hear there's a new version coming.

Why
do you think playing for 100 hours will allow you to get a free copy of the sequel? In fact, how does this even remotely make sense?

Why

Do you think you are the best player? There are people out there who have +1,000 hours in Universe Sandbox.

Why

Would you think you would earn Dan's favor by saying you play so much? Do you think it gives him money or something?

How

Do you think your chances of getting the game will be improved if you say you'll play it five hours a day? Again, do you think that playing the game supports him? It doesn't!

Why would you ask this when

There are so many threads out there about the people with early access to the sequel, etc. There's even a message at the top of the thread that says "Alpha Signups are closed and we (Giant Army) will not be accepting any more testers."!!!

Do you even know

What it means to be an Alpha Tester? It means checking the game for bugs and actively reporting them with the feedback button, not playing the game for hours on end!

And the cherry on the sundae is that narcissism will get you nowhere.

My God, you people! In the end, I might leave the forum altogether because of you guys!

(P.S. A sincere apology to Dan, I'm so sorry about this post. I've been trying my hardest for you to keep my temper around the forums but this one really set me off. I hope I never have to do this again. Again, I'm really sorry about this incident.)

I am alpha tasker.I don't understand you said needn't anymore tasker,why?
WHY IS 100 ALPHA TESTERS NOT ENOUGH FOR YOU!? Lol, but on a more serious note, 100 alpha testers. Surely there will be a diverse amount of operating systems and video cards, etc. for the Alpha to be tested under any circumstances. Plus, the game is months from release, another Alpha Signup is pretty pointless, don't you think?

I have hundreds of hours of game on many video games and I do not ask the developer a copy of their upcoming games ^^ You are one of the best players? There are no ranking in Universe Sandbox so you could not be one of the best players.

And yeah, I agree with you on this one - I don't think seven billion free copies of the game, when only a billionth of them would actually report bugs, would be a great idea, don't you think? That would be chaos for Dan and Giant Army.

I have this Universe Sadbox :)

Can't wait, when you can see effects of supernova on planets with intelligent life depending on distance. Buts that in 10 - 30 years, computers/programming isn't that sophisticated yet.

For now its still waay better than previous version of  Universe Sandbox :D
Title: Re: Welcome to the Alpha Board
Post by: Xriqxa on October 15, 2014, 06:29:50 AM
10-30 years? More like a couple months of hard concentrated work.

And what effects would a supernova have on intelligent life?
Title: Re: Welcome to the Alpha Board

10-30 years? More like a couple months of hard concentrated work.

And what effects would a supernova have on intelligent life?

I was thinking about something like accurate life/civilization simulation (like climate simulation/stellar evolution/collision on full release), that would require low time steofor accuracy.
Now you can't just zap thousands of years in planetary system/climate simulation to see effects of changing orbit/precession of Earth. These calculations are done in supercomputers now, but in 20 years our computers will be more powerful. Just compare with average computers of 1994 year.

It depends: Closest planets would lose all life (or even get molten), farther ones would lose multicellular/intelligent life or civilizations depending on distance.
Farther ones would get disrupted, or notice it shining and reacting to it, displaying some flavor text in planetary information.
For now supernovas just fry everything.

*Time step

That still would only take less than a year to do if they really focused on just that.

*Time step

Well, but then time step should be much larger than one day. I can't run solar system faster than 200 days/second before mercury's orbit deteriorates.
I was thinking about hardware requirements for running solar system at 10 or 100 years/second, not difficulty of programming ;)
