Well, I've been having some problems with the browser the last couple of days and with AVG blocking attempted attacks and with the browser popping up a random spam page. I asked my uncle about it and said that it's a spyware problem, I asked him about a good spyware cleaner and he said CA antivirus (or more specifically, internet security suite).

However, CA antivirus didn't cure it (besides, I have to pay 50$ to activate it for full functionality), so I looked around and found a site that listed some stuff that would clean things up. I tried looking at the Panda securities thing and it just detects and I have to pay 15 dollars to clean, got Spybot Search and Destroy (got the beta 4 for the version 2 of it actually) and despite a few problems related to it being a beta, I did clean things up and the problem I had seems to be cured, at least mostly. I also checked out Spy Emergency but I dunno, that one is more of a combination antivirus and anti-spyware though.

So, anybody know whether AVG (I had the free version) is better than the CA antivirus or what? I'm siding towards AVG since the annoying popup saying you need to activate the product doesn't make me want to buy it, plus I'm not paying 50 bucks. Not to mention that I know AVG works well against viruses and malware, but doesn't seem to be able to clean up spyware.

Secondarily, what would a good free spyware cleaner and protector program be?

My uncle also recommended doing a browser reinstall and also I think its still infected with something because when I went to the clamwin site through google search, something shunted me to some 'get answers fast' junk search thing.

If all else fails, I'll do a browser reinstall....

I have Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and has worked fine for me so far.

Idk anything about the other antivirus things.

It turns out that the CA antivirus thing was tying up CPU memory for some reason, it was annoying me with the 'buy me!*' pop up anyways....

*It didn't actually say that, but it's the same message.

Thanks for the advice, Superantipyware cleaned out some stuff, including lots of tracking cookies that the other antivirus stuff missed. It did catch a few more cookies that it missed on the second pass. I guess I really neglected the computer as far as spyware goes.

I'll use MS security essentials for now, at least it doesn't try to hog system resources like the CA antivirus thing did Tongue It doesn't have some of the features of other antivirus programs, but hey....

Fiah, that's why your computer is horribly slow. On your Minecraft issue, try uninstalling Norton and getting another antivirus program as they are both Java, and are most likely conflicting.

I used to use Norton, but then I took an arrow... but then I got a new com.
My experiences with Norton are: NORTON IS SLOWW!!!!!!!
It takes a ridiculous amount of computer resources. I don't actually know if it is actually more secure than other antiviri, but... Well, MSSE has worked fine for me for a couple of years.

Just a fun fact about antivirus programs making money from protecting us: The less of a threat viruses are to your computer, the less of a reason you have to buy their antivirus. Kolkolkapitali$m

Why would it take months to replace them though?

Just use UPS, they're pretty cheap and weekly deliveries are more common than month long deliveries.

Do you use a desktop or laptop Fiah?
