Uh, I can read. I was just telling one of the developers what I would like to see in US3 and to show I was serious about the functionality, I would gladly pay a decent amount for an upgrade.

A thought, would the simulations we have be compatible with Universe Sandbox 3 or will we have to start from scratch, or at least rebuild from scratch?
We intend to support old system formats. However, we're also aiming to improve UniverseSandbox in such a way that it will be easier and more fun to create systems in the application instead of having to edit XML manually. If you add the ability to punch in any date (4,000 b.c. to 4,000 a.d. for example) in order to get the applicable solar system ephemeris as a starting point in a simulation verus the current static starting date of 2008 blah blah and I will pay $50 for the update to US3. I'm really excited about the graphical possibilities since the switch to Unity too. Happy coding. He has always coded it in unity.

@phinehas: From what I've read, Dan was using an old version or platform of Unity3D and is now using the latest version or platform. He is using the same kind of engine, which is Unity3D.

Please provide links of what you read that would substantiate that.
Other than what I quoted of Dan's words, I guess I am being optimistic that what he has used for US2 is some other, less exciting and older engine and now he has gone over to a new engine that is being further developed, i.e. Unity.
Of course, Dan can just pipe in an explain the situation more clearly. Until then, I believe that Unity is the "new" engine that they are using for US3 and the current one is not Unity.

Yea, the situation isn't all that clear, it's been said that he used an engine that hasn't been updated in almost a year and I thought Dan had said he used Unity (or maybe he was referring to the SQUID UI thing). Whatever the case is, he IS using the latest Unity engine for UBox3

hmmm, you may be right. http://www.ionstar.org/The Squid is just the UI. I guess I was thinking the "new engine" of using Unity was in relation to the 3D and not just to UI elements..which quite frankly I don't see as being the bottleneck for improvement. So, if US2 is using Unity, then perhaps it's just a matter of getting more out of it, hence the need for other programmers. Hopefully he will chime in when he get's the chance and clarify what he can, subject to the level of proprietary information he is willing to disclose. [Edit] I still don't know what to think. http://kotaku.com/5835484/universe-sandbox-getting-stellar-update-not-a-pun-next-year-mac-compatibility-too"The new version, built for the Unity engine" http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1887491.html"The 3D engine and UI library ( http://www.ionstar.org/) I use most notably influenced the development of the simulator." [Edit] [Edit] LOL, now I am back to thinking US2 wasn't using Unity. Per 3 months ago. http://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/l5an2/my_interactive_gravity_simulator_universe_sandbox/"The current version is all managed .NET and DirectX, but we're converting to Unity and C#." I'm going to settle on this being the fact, unless Dan states otherwise.

Universe Sandbox 1 and 2 were made with Truevision3D and used Squid for its UI. Click on the "Credits" link on the main menu for a full listing of what I used and who helped.
Universe Sandbox 3 is being made with Unity 3D and will use Squid for its UI.

Looks beautiful the new UI.
I particularly like the font and the icons on the left, very friendly style and for some reason they remind me of Maxis' titles.

@Yannos: SimCity maybe?
Also, a thought. Dan, will roche limit functionality (as in it actually works rather than just an indicator) actually work in US3 and sync along with the new collision and possibly new explosion system?

Good question. Probably, but nothing is locked down yet. We have too many things to do, so as soon as it's notably better than it is now we're going to release it then work on more minor and regular updates. If it's not in the initial release of Universe Sandbox 3, it's likely we'll include it in a future update.

Yea, I know you guys would have to get the new collision system up and running and possibly a new explosion system* running before you can get to the Roche limit functionality.
*I think it was implied you were doing a new explosion system. Still, you're using a new engine, so, we'll just have to see I guess.

Dan what time you think US3 will come out 2012 Q2, 2012 Q3 or 2012 Q4 He said earlier that he doesn't know at this point when it will be released. I'm hoping for a summer release myself though.

If it takes too long or there are any major delays... we'll likely release a public beta until we're ready to officially retire version 2. Although I don't have any timetable on any of this yet other than we'll release something in 2012.

Also, whats with the money icon? or is that just for those who haven't bought it yet?
That's funny... The icons are totally arbitrary and temporary. The dollar sign actually shows the options. There's nothing to read into the screenshot from the icons. Don't believe a word of it! Clicking the money sign will drain your bank accounts! And that "use squid" over the framerate at the bottom? That's referring to a new type of trojan virus! On a slightly more serious note, pretty!
