I'm against SOPA, a proposed United States law that would make simply linking to copyrighted material illegal and would effectively force me to shut down these forums out of fear of jail time for the actions of others. This is why Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, and Wikipedia are all against it.

What is SOPA and why is it bad?
http://americancensorship.org/infographic.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act

It's a terrible law written by corporations for their benefit alone. It will stifle innovation and destroy the internet as we know it.

If you live in the United States you can send a message to your representative urging them to vote against SOPA using this link:
https://wfc2.wiredforchange.com/o/9042/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=8173

I'm going to leave this topic 'sticky' until the terrible law is voted down or abandoned.

We shall import the models of the people who wish to pass this bill, set them to auto orbit around the sun, and change their eccentricity to 1.0!

I'm pretty sure the only ones for it are very stupid people, major corporations, and very stupid congresspeople.

Wouldn't that also mean that tens of thousands of forums would have to be closed, even fan forums?

Whoever thought of that law is a complete idiot really, and yes I'm against it. Not to mention the extreme unintended consequences, heck, the law of unintended consequences hit that strict Alabama immigration law pretty hard.

Anybody want to bet a republican created the law?

Because they'd care?

And people who obviously don't understand the internet and how it functions.

lol!

Also, according to Wikipedia, Ron Paul is against it, which is good. While I agree with him about focusing more domestically (bridge repairs anybody?), however his isolationist attitude is pure texan stupidity (thats at the politicians in general, especially republicans, regular texans are fine). Santorum in an interview on CNN made a really good description of it 'cut ties with foriegn policies and curl up into a fetal position' I forget what exactly he said before fetal position, but he is right on the mark.

Not to mention that the wiki page mentions that it sets an extremely dangerous precedent and that unintended consequences will come back to bite washington on the ass.

The internet used to be free (well not really)... But then it took a SOPA in the knee.

Yes, this is corporate fascism. Copyright should be the right to copy whatever you want, not the "right" to stop people from doing it.

it's even annoying for us who aren't in the US. If we link to anything copyrighted there, then bam, the US is on our case.

Exactly. Law of unintended consequences. Not to mention that the law would set a very dangerous precedent.

It was me going off on a bit of a rant about texan politicians, don't worry about it, and I only used one or two 'bad words'.

Interesting video. It also tells a lot about how weak our corrupt, money-driven "democracies" are.

This link also has some things which people not living in USA can do.

http://americancensorship.org/

I feel like such a slacktivist for signing so many online petitions but never going outside to protest against what is happening around Earth... Lol. Sad

You know, I wonder if the copyright stuff in SPOA would hit even those that actually want that bill. What about service sites like banking sites? Sounds like the law of unintended consequences is going to hit like a nuke. Not to mention the dangerous precedants because OTHER countries could very well do the same things to us.

If the recent protests are saying anything about the general discontent at the goverment, I'm sure there are going to be massive protests if this happens. Hell, I hope the problems happen to the senators and congresspeople themselves because I'm sure they have their favorite sites and daily stuff that will be affected.

Seriously, we need a new government.

Edit: I wonder how far the consequences will go because all it takes is one errant link or ad to shut down even a companies own help forums.

OR maybe other companies will use software copyrights for software that another major company uses? I can predict all hell breaking loose if either or both of those laws go through.

I suppose this would be an effective way of making a statement if any of these laws pass. People could make sure the companies' sites themselves break the law and then they realize that they messed up. Bad.

I've just thought of something, what about the government sites themselves? I don't mean just the big ones, I mean stuff like USGS, state parks, congresspeoples and senators own sites, state government sites.....

The law of unintended consequences might actually hit as hard as the moon crashing into the earth, or that protoplanet, Theia I believe, crashing into the proto-Earth to form our moon.

We have too many old people in congress and senate right now maybe......

I would really rather target the corporations that fund and are for this bill than the government sites themselves... Undecided
