The US is in a geographically strategic location, isolated by two major oceans. It would be hard for an invading superpower to sustain an invasion of the mainland. Unless a surprise first strike happens and all of our allies suddenly turns on us too.
And there's over a hundred million gun owners. Political affiliation = irrelevant. Millions would take up arms to defend themselves and country, and to protect friends and families.
