Post the most excessive and unrealistic lens flares here! I'll start with this one:

Well I suppose how the lens flare looks depends on how the camera optics are built. (or in this case, how they attempt to simulate a camera.

Unfortunately I have no examples of absurd lens flare.

I just think it's a wierd idea to try to simulate a camera with optics which cause it to have the most ugly, excessive lens flares going all the way across the landscape and sky in everything from red pentagons through rainbows of overlapping pentagons to huge blue discs while real cameras try the exact opposite, and usually succeed. yeah it's crazy to me.
photographers do everything in their power to eliminate flare
yet game designers feel the need to shove it everywhere.
it's especially silly when they are trying to simulate a real world environment through the eyes of the main character.
(there's even lens flare in the total war series......all of which so far have been set in a time before cameras were  even invented )

racing games are also guilty of over using it, now call me crazy but the last time i drove a car i didn't do it whilst looking through a camera.
why put lens flares in the cockpit view of a racing game when you're meant to be looking through the drivers eyes.

by all means use it in a replay , a situation that may actually use a camera, otherwise it just looks stupid

I couldn't agree more! Even though this excessive use may have made me so tired of it that I'd prefer never to have to look at it again, including cameras too. Tongue
I've never noticed it IRL on photos, films etc. I've searched for some specific examples, which showed that lens flare exists, but that's all. Even the worst examples I've seen are less extreme than the picture.

There are a few games that don't have lens flare and make your screen flood with white when you look at the sun. But I think this isn't in most games because most gamers would probably complain about it being too annoying.

I use an RC simulator that does that (I fly model helicopters)
and i have flown a heli into the sun in real life (not on purpose of course) . its very convincing in the sim. as i crashed in real life and every time i do it on the sim i also crash Smiley
that's why nowadays i always fly with the sun at my back.
